Graduate Assistant Academic Coach & Advisor
Full-time, (20 Hours Per Week)
Primary Purpose
In the Office of Academic Advising graduate students have the opportunity to work with a diverse team while developing skills that include but are not limited to academic advising, communication, problem solving, interpersonal skills, academic counseling, and teamwork. In addition, graduate students in this role will be able to develop experience in student success initiatives, retention efforts, academic advising philosophies, first year transitions, student development, social media marketing and higher education. The graduate assistant is also encouraged to attend professional development opportunities, network with faculty and staff, and engage with the campus community to build connections to support their future goals.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Graduate Assistant in the Office of Academic Advising is someone who works as an academic coach to undergraduate students as they chart a successful path at Rhode Island College and may carry a small case load of first-year students for advising.
- Primarily, the Graduate Assistant serves as an Academic Coach within the Office of Academic Advising. Through this role, the Graduate Assistant would support students through individual meetings to understand their Academic Standing and a path forward as they work to achieve Good Standing. In these meetings, they will discuss resources for support, academic skill building, and provide registration support informed by the students’
- Academic Standing. Graduate Assistants will also serve as a support to students who are Flagged in the Starfish system. In previous years Graduate Assistants have played a vital role in serving the academic needs of the students.
- Additionally, graduate assistants collaborate with professional staff in the development of new retention efforts at RIC. Graduate assistants will use Starfish to advise their students and will support the intervention efforts for at-risk students through the Starfish early-alert system.
- Graduate students may also serve as an advisor for a small group of first-year students within the Office of Academic Advising populations. This includes supporting students in course registration, resource referral, and major exploration.
- The Graduate Assistant will collaborate with the Office of Advising team on enhancing the offices' social presence and planning events related to advising, registration, and major exploration.
